Firsts are loaded with a full range of highs and lows. (Remember some of your own firsts?) For the Green Wine Summit, the ideas, the organization, the coming together of this wide range of people and industries is extraordinary and certainly not a moment too soon. Some highlights:
- Media Matters: Meet the new green media and their agenda. Panelists Seth Bauer, Vice President & Directing Editor of National Geographic’s Green Guide and Robyn Hessinger, Editor in Chief of Care2.com were indeed a highlight of the day. Be sure to check out their work. Care2.com may be looking for wine bloggers as they don’t yet have that niche filled. Their broad spectrum vision, research and contribution to the conversation about going green is inclusive, not preach-y, big picture, not provincial, and filled with compassion, not resentment. The low of the day belongs to the moderator of this breakout session. I wrote about the unfortunate comparison he made here: “There are journalists and bloggers. There are doctors and faith healers.” A sad juxtaposition to the panelists who diplomatically back pedaled away from this sentiment, immediately.
- Representative Mike Thompson: Democrat, representing California’s First District. Rep. Thompson was the lunch keynote speaker. He is a grape grower. And he offered appreciation for the green direction the wine industry is taking as well as tremendous optimism for the next 4 years to that end. I found his speech to be interesting, friendly and authentic.
- Vinlux Fine Wine Transport: The first Peterbuilt hybrid electric medium build trucks are delivering wine with “concierge level service” in California now that the Jackson’s and Biagi’s co-created the new wine delivery and storage company. But what’s REALLY important: They gave me the keys to go for a spin! Really. At 26,000 lbs, the truck is the largest (by weight) a C Class licsence permits me to drive. I’ve gotta tell you, driving a hybrid truck full of wine…had my adrenaline going!
So bravo to the Green Wine Summit. It is always fasctinating when people and their ideas and hard work come together in our industry looking to make it even better.
