It may seem counter intuitive, the title “Coming Together” on Election Day, 2008, but that’s what I see. Maybe by party at first, (I’m a Democrat), but ultimately I believe, we’ll come together Nationally. The turn-out even at this early hour suggests the greatest voter turn out ever. I’m calling that “Coming Together”. Starbucks is offering a FREE cup of coffee if you have an “I Voted” sticker…as well as many other special offers from businesses…regardless of your political affiliation. I also call that “Coming Together”.
Yes, there is political hoopla! Yes, there is distortion of facts, on both sides, and yes, there are people so impassioned by one side that some of them are now in jail as a result of their extremism. But for the most part, so far, we have practiced a completely reasonable, thought not flawless, exercise in Democracy. Yes, I would prefer everyone, regardless of their opinion, to go out and vote. Higher turn out is for me a milestone for pride in our nation. Yes, I would prefer my candidate to win, but that is not the point.
The point is that we are having discussions. The point is that we are engaged is working on what’s wrong and looking for alternatives to make it right. And the point is, my kids will be engaged with a map of the USA tonight, looking at what states are turning red and blue, and my message to them will be, whatever you think, after you are informed, it is ok. Just participate. (ok, I hope they will also be Democrats, of course!). But really, the more people are involved with our mechanism for prosperity and problem solving, the more successful we will ALL be. That is the point.
